Garage Sale Music

by Jason on 6/21/2009 in Weekend Comics

I just missed 8-tracks. They were fading out just as I was becoming musically aware. And by aware, I mean graduating from the Happy Days record that I completely wore out. The cassette tape was my domain, and I used my art skills to decorate an abundance of mix tapes. (If you’re feeling nostalgic about mix tapes, you should check out the article “For the Love of the Mx Tape” in issue #5 of our magazine.)

Of course, cassettes gave way to CDs which have given way to MP3s and the like. I’m not sure what’s next; it seems like planting chips in our heads that allow us to listen to any song our mind asks for is the ultimate end game. It’s weird to think that someday iPods will go the way of the 8-track and become old fashioned and dated. It’s even weirder to think that the first CDs I ever bought came in long rectabgular boxes. Weirder still? The CDs I bought first were Homebase by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and the Ghost soundtrack.

What was the first album/8-track/cassette/CD you ever bought?

I had an 8 track player, and I had Queen’s Day at the Races as the one I first remember listening to.

For cassettes, I remember getting Huey Lewis and the News Sports. What an album! I’m hoping to see Huey and company at Summerfest this year! Woo-hoo!

En Vogue. Oh yes, En Vogue. It was the first piece of music that I bought with my own hard earned money.

My first album was Meet the Beatles – I had the biggest crush on them! The tape/CD that I’ve worn out the most, though is the Muppet Christmas with John Denver. I had an 8-track, three cassettes and now I’m on my first CD, although that’s getting worn out, too. They do the best “Twelve Days of Christmas” ever!!

Craig — shouldn’t Urban Chipmunk have the boys singing rap songs?

Phil — Huey Lewis Rules.

Rev — You’re never gonna get it.

Judy — Meet the Beatles? Now that is a first album to be proud of!

Jason – Just shows how old I am…. Urban Chipmunk was a take off of John Travolta’s Urban Cowboy. Came out in the 1980. See here:
