Every Thursday, we pick out one of the cool things from the Kim & Jason Lemonade Stand and give it away. Yep, for free.

This week’s prize is an Aeroplane Kit. Ready for an afternoon in the clouds? Well get on your pilot’s goggles and get ready for takeoff. This high performance rubber band powered airplane was constructed with state of the art aerodynamics in mind. Not quite NASA dynamics, but close. Simply assemble to components in the kit and your airplane will be flying in no time, up to 100 meters to be exact! You can even adjust the positioning of the components to alter the trajectory of your flight.

    Here’s how to enter:

    1. Just leave a comment on this post, answering this week’s question: “If you had a free ticket to fly anywhere in the universe, where would you go?”
    2. Deadline for entries is 11:59 pm CST on the day of the post. We’ll pick a winner from the list of comments on the following Friday.
    3. We’ll contact the winner by e-mail to find out where to send the prize.

Good luck! And don’t miss any of the other cool stuff for the young at heart at The Kim & Jason Lemonade Stand!

**UPDATE: This week’s winner was Dora:

Hmmm, the question says anywhere in the “universe”. In that case, I’d say outer outer space, through black holes and worm holes and warped space-time-energy-whatnot so I can see and prove once and for all whether there are any alien life forms out there. If not, then we can all get back to our normal daily lives, thinking about what to eat for lunch. :)

If I am restricted to just Earth *gasp*, the only place to be in right now is London.

Even though this week’s contest is over, you can still buy your very own Aeroplane Kit at the Kim & Jason Lemonade Stand. And stay tuned next week for the next chance to win!

I had just a few more thoughts to share expounding on the recent post regarding our adventure registering for the essential baby gear needed to parent effectively in the 21st century.

Contrary to the popular instant gratification trend of our society, Kim and I have decided to keep the baby’s sex a secret. (In fact, I intend to keep sex a secret from baby for at least thirty-five years.)

If I can use the word sex one more time in this post, maybe it will rank higher in the search engines. Sex. Sex. Sex. (That should do it.)

Anyway, there are too few surprises left in the world, and this is one we don’t think is necessary to spoil.

The downside is that it’s pretty clear that our baby’s favorite colors better be yellow and green. I’m not sure who decided on baby color schemes, but it works like this: If you’re having a boy, he is to be dressed head to toe in blue. Girls need to be plastered in pink. And if you’re not sure, well, yellow and green are your only options. Oh, and no matter what, each color only comes in pastel. Period.

Meanwhile, while the baby clothes are offered only in pastel, the baby toys are made with the brightest, boldest, most saturated colors known to man. I looked down an aisle featuring a wall of baby toys, and my corneas almost exploded.

    But I digress.

I think this color-coding of clothes according to gender is strange, because if you were to look in our closet, it’s not like Kim’s side is filled with pink clothes, while my side is completely blue (let alone pastel blue). What’s a daddy got to do to get some black onesies in the house? Seriously, we were looking at some accent pieces to add to the nursery and Kim thoughtfully asked, “If we have a boy, is this too feminine?”

I looked around at all of the offerings and said, “Are you kidding? Everything here is kind of feminine.”

And that’s just how it is. Babies are cute, and somewhere along the line, the color gods decided that pastel was the appropriate shade for all things cute. Far be it from me to buck tradition.

Besides, yellow is kind of growing on me.

This week’s Escape Plan challenge (aka our Tip of the Week) is: #5 Mad Scientist: Become a scientist. Conduct a silly experiment.

When I was teaching, it never failed that the kids showed excessive amounts of enthusiasm and interest on the days we were conducting science experiments. There’s something about tapping into that natural childlike curiosity that ignites whole new levels of childlike passion.

It’s so much fun to see the same reactions in grown-ups. The ever so childlike Ellen DeGeneres has found a way to keep her curiosity hopping with her regular guest, Steve Spangler. Steve is all about making learning fun and he shares simple (and outrageous!) experiments that are sure to bring out the kid in all of us. His website is a great resource for maintaining that spirit of inquiry that we had so easily when we were five.

Have a blast getting some inspiration from the science master of fun. You’re sure to get some ideas for this week’s tip.

Share with us in the comments of the Escape Plan blog what silly experiment you had fun with this week.

In the meantime, enjoy this hilarious video of Ellen and Steve. I especially loved the last minute or so when a bunch of the grown-ups were experiencing major childlike giddiness with the climax of his final experiment…

A couple weeks ago, Kim and I had the extreme privilege of appearing on Army Wife Talk Radio.

Army Wife Talk Radio is the internet talk radio show designed specifically for army wives by army wives. They feature information, special reports, empowerment, inspiration, stories and interviews. Army Wife Talk Radio is a weekly LIVE one-hour show that is available every Monday via their website. You can download the archived audio or stream it and listen through your computer. The show includes information relative to military spouses and families; many different topics are covered each week.

Their purpose is to motivate, inspire, and empower Army wives worldwide to make the most of their lifestyle choice. They strive to do this by providing helpful information, interviews, and tips that take the guesswork out of Army life.

So Kim and I were invited to be guests on the show, and we had a hoot! We talked a lot about Adultitis and how it affects Army Wives. We also jumped into their spirited live chat room as well. Kudos to the gals at Army Wife Talk Radio for their service to their audience and their country — we are big fans!

Listen to an archive of the show here.

Jason loves to surprise me. One day a few weeks ago while I was on a walk with a friend, he busily scurried around to paint the nursery, then he patiently waited for me to go in there and notice, which was about 10 hours of waiting! (I would never have been able to wait that long!) Another morning, after talking the day before about the fact that Coldplay was coming to Chicago, he surprised me by sharing that he got us two tickets. (WOO HOO!) His love of surprises is a very childlike trait! And it’s sure fun to be on the receiving end.

The concert, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida Tour, was this last Tuesday at the United Center and to say it was awesome would be a huge understatement! What a delight to hear their distinctive tunes live… unbelievable! For those of you who’ve downloaded our recent magazine about music, you already know what Jason and I think of live music.

Not a surprise, it was a sold-out show. The crowd was eager. As we waited for the concert to start, Jason and I shared smiles and comments about a very cute couple in front of us to the left. They happened to be baby boomers, showing oodles of anticipation, literally sitting at the edge of their seats. They passed the time with their digital camera, taking turns reaching out an arm to capture both of them in that classic couple pose. Their enthusiasm was oozing.

Meanwhile, of the 24,000 people there, I was lucky enough to sit next to what must’ve been a relative of the Adultitis Guy. He was a Gen-Y’er, half the age of the couple in front of us. He was there with his girlfriend and although he didn’t seem unhappy to be there, his true colors were soon to shine when Chris Martin took the stage.

Here’s how it went down. The concert started with the acoustic tune Life In Technicolor. Everyone screamed… and immediately the woman in front of us jumped anxiously to her feet, screaming and cheering with her hands in the air. She was pumped! (As were we!) This was the moment we all had been waiting for (especially through two very horrific opening acts). Except for a few slow songs, in which everyone around us sat for a rest, the woman ahead of us stood for about 90% of the concert, much to the chagrin of my neighbor to the left. He sulked, sighed, shook his head, shrugged his shoulders, and spent much of his energy being distracted. In his defense, her standing prevented him from seeing the stage, but there was one very simple solution. So badly I wanted to turn to him and say, “Buddy, let it go and stand up, already. You’re at a rock concert for Pete’s sake! Live a little!”

Doesn’t it all come down to your attitude? I’m sure his concert was somewhat, if not totally, ruined because of this childlike woman who seemed to squeeze every ounce of enjoyment out of each chorus and hook. Such a shame to pay so much money and end up pouting… what a childish display!

In life, circumstances are often out of your control, but wisdom and peace is found when you make the effort to change your attitude. I wish, for his sake, that this 20-something would’ve had the perspective to do so.

This whole display reminded me of how unimportant age really is. It means nothing! It’s all about your attitude and actions, not how many candles cover your cake each year. Ironically, the wisdom to let go and be more childlike often comes with age.

I want to die young at a ripe old age. -Ashley Montagu

I found a clip on YouTube of a song from our concert. Chris (the lead singer) often reminds me of the Charlie Brown dancers. His childlike movements are so much fun to watch! Enjoy…

Every Thursday, we pick out one of the cool things from the Kim & Jason Lemonade Stand and give it away. Yep, for free.

This week’s prize is a set of Wedding Magic Beans. Within each hot stamped velour pouch is a collection of agriculture and heirloom beans that have been marked with thoughtful words using a patent pending process. The beans can be kept as a sentimental token or planted, however the true magic is seen when the planted beans sprout. The words are still on the pods as they emerge from the soil. People can actually see their wishes growing!

Words included in each Wedding pouch: Honor, Love, Desire, Grow, Devote, Balance, Forgive, Promise, Enjoy, and Listen.

    Here’s how to enter:

    1. Just leave a comment on this post, answering this week’s question: “What is your earliest wedding memory?”

**UPDATE: This week’s winner was Diane Crotty:

My birth father died when I was two.  Before I turned three, Mom married the man I consider my real dad.  Anyway, my earliest memory is of their wedding.  I was the flower girl and my 18-month old brother was SUPPOSED to be the ring-bearer.  Brother Duane only cooperated at first:  He walked down the aisle right to our new dad, but instead of just standing there, he wanted to be held.  When Dad didn’t pick him up right away, Duane looked at the congregation, looked at the floor, got down on his back, and started to ROLL down the aisle towards the back of the church.  As the big sister (a bossy one at that), I felt responsible, but one look from Mom convinced me to stay frozen where I was while the crowd laughed and watched Duane roll back down the aisle.

Even though this week’s contest is over, you can still buy your very own Wedding Magic Beans at the Kim & Jason Lemonade Stand. And stay tuned next week for the next chance to win!
