Here’s the dirty little secret… most people like it when they aren’t the only ones playing it safe
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How true is that? Not only they are not the only ones playing it safe, since they're playing the game, they're going to make you suffer too.

A simple case in point. Traffic is backed up. You want to move over into another lane. You turn on your blinker. The car in the lane you want to ingress, notices your blinker, speeds up so that can't go.

If I play the game to my detriment, it's OK. Especially if others around me get to suffer because of my consequences. We're all playing the same game. But what happens if someone else refuses to play the game? He deserves nothing but anger and derision. Of course until I decide I don't want to play the game any longer.

>> Rule: If you decide to move somewhere, you should have a job lined up or at least have contacts in the area to help you secure employment

If my parents were aware of this rule 40 years ago, I'm glad they didn't follow it. My asthma was so bad when I was three, that the doctor told my folks "Move him to a drier climate or lose him." Mom and Dad moved, and Dad had no job lined up. But apparently I was important to them. :) (Thanks again, M&D!)

Fascinating... GenXers (and a large percentage of the other generations) in Seattle, WA seem to have a very similar rule to GenXers in Madison, WI. I for one don't follow it.

I told a friend recently that my husband was going back to work after seven months trying to get his business off the ground. Banks just aren't handing out loans to new businesses like they used to, and he's having to put the idea on hold until the timing is better.

She was noticeably relieved that we have "security" again. She's putting her dreams aside for some later date when she might have to give up her comfortable life in order to do what she loves, and I know that she has a hard time comprehending why we want to live like we do.

I'd rather be his-and-her entrepreneurs, taking risks for a life we love than waiting around until "some later date" (probably never) to actually pursue my dream.

No car. I live in downtown Sacramento, walk, bike, and use public transportation. It drives my ex crazy that I don't have a car but I don't need one.
No regular job. I am living on alimony (one more year of that)and have a non regular job taking care of a disabled friend, the state pays me for that. In the meantime I'm starting a network marketing business. This also drives my ex crazy.
No wonder we aren't married anymore. I'm not much for following rules.

Way to make non-convention great and to give us all hope that we CAN achieve our dreams, especially if we kick conventional wisdom out the door!

Great advice! It's like non-conforming in a way that doesn't hurt anyone.

Sometimes we miss the obvious and don't even realize there is a question to be asked like, "Why do we do things this way?"

These are some rules we've broken in our house:
Rule: If you go to school to be a nurse you should remain a nurse. After working as a maternity nurse for 12 years I became a stay-at-home mom and then I became a writer on top of that.

Rule: Don't ever homeschool, but if you do, you should proceed just like the school system. Hogwash! We've taken a relaxed, natural approach to education, allowing our kids to discover what they like and are made to do and they've turned out great.

Rule: Keep up with the Joneses. Forget the Joneses and their material lifestyle. Make them want to keep up with you cause you're having so much fun.
