My mom has always been a big music fan so I grew up (I shudder to say “enjoying”)…enjoying Helen Reddy, Anne Murray, Barry Manilow and The BeeGees…but I’d say we “bonded” as in crossed generations with the music from Grease. My dad hated it…so again you’ve got a mother/daughter bond thing. My dad liked The Statler Bros. Johnny Cash,Spike Jones and Homer and Jethro. Yikes!
After meeting my husband I got a tape of Kate Bush! She, Enya and the soundtracks from Room w/a View and Out of Africa are kinda our romance music. (I feel so old right now)
Our daughter loves our music (for now) and we listen as a family to: ABBA, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd, Wyclef Jean,Shakira,Sarah Brightman, soundtracks to classic broadway tunes (sound of music/fiddler on the roof) Jewel, Puppini Sisters, Andrew Sisters rocked her to sleep when she was a baby, The Smiths, Hank Williams, Poi Dog, Cat STevens…and (phew) even Beethoven. We love music. All of it. Music truly can bridge generations. Unless your Elvis. Or the Beatles coming to America.

Songs are a part of my life and memories. I have a constant soundtrack running in my head, an annual theme song (this year–I’m Gonna Live until I Die” with Frank Sinatra). I hear Jimmy Buffet and think of my college roommate, One Week and see two friends who vowed to memorize the words in college, Give Me One Reason by Tracy Chapman and I’m vacuuming the sanctuary floor (high school janitor job), Be Thou My Vision and I’m walking across the bridge toward the ocean in my wedding, Sisters (from White Christmas) and I’m dancing with my sister, Silent Night (my mom’s nightly song to me, no matter what the season) and my eyes droop. I could go on.

Actually, I may be deluding myself, but I wouldn’t mind repeating some things from high school, especially many musical parts. I’m not able to recall a specific song, but I do like some “oldies” music, which helps me relate to the people around me at times. That cassette tape bag is a hoot (very imaginative!), but it sort of makes me cringe, too, as I recall ruined tapes I’ve lost through out the years (the mixed tape losses being especially painful…D’oh! LOL).
