Ever make shadow puppets when you were little?

As kids, my sisters and I always loved it when our begging would finally pay off and we’d get to have an evening watching our home movies on the old movie projector. (It was a lot of work to set-up, mom assured us.) As dad got the film ready to go, along with that one random hair projecting on the wall, our tiny hands would make all sorts of creations. Butterflies were the easiest.

Our speaking programs are filled with visuals, which means that we have an LCD projector and screen set-up at every gig. Inevitably, every intergenerational program (ages 5-105) we have ends the same way. As we get done at the autograph table and head to clean up, we find a handful of kids making shadow puppets on the screen.

Kids are fun magnets. If fun is possible, they will find it.

I happened upon this video today of a “big kid” also having fun with shadows (danka to Jon at Happy Mundane).

This is shadow puppets at it’s best. Enjoy!

There’s a cool shadow puppet show in the Cirque du Soleil show “Ka,” that has very similar critters. I wonder if Raymond Crowe consulted with them. Amazing video!

I saw that video before - it’s so great. And of course I immediately thought of kids. I think this guy was just a “big” kid. :0)

If you want to spark some creativity hang around with kids - they don’t know any of the rules yet, and even if they do, they don’t use them. :0)
