The first thing I thought of at the start of this post, was the funny commercial our local lumber yard did when Home Depot came in. It went on about “The Big Orange Hardware Store” and was hilarious while at the same time getting the point across that there was something to be said for years of experience in the area. Then as I continued on and read about “tie day” I was REALLY happy, being the owner of a men’s clothing store (click my name). We love any idea that promotes ties ![]()

[...] Back in February when we were finishing up The Escape Plan Jason shared on his blog about the long-lasting effects of Challenge #36, which was born out of some happenings from Challenge #33. Basically Jason’s Dad, Walt, who was an active participant in the 40-Day Challenge, wore a bow tie to work and it was a big hit. It even helped him land a big sale. The Escape Plan Challenge was: Accessorize your wardrobe today with a touch of childhood. [...]

I was randomly googling ideas for my dad’s retirement, and came across your blog entry.
My dad has been teaching for 30 years. Sometime near the start of his career, he decided that Wednesday would be “tie day”. It’s the only day he wears a tie, and over the years, he’s gotten most of his colleagues and even a few of his students on the tie bandwagon. Cool to hear about your dad’s tie story. ![]()

You’d think this would be enough to stand out in the marketplace. However, price competition is a seductive mistress and it can be easy to be intimidated by the Big Boxes (i.e. Wal-Mart, Menards, etc.) and slip into the belief that you must compete on their terms. This ill-fated belief is why so many mom and pop shops go under. You can’t beat the big boys at their own game. But they can’t beat you at yours, either.
